We can unblock the leader’s block with these five easy to remember actions. As I mentioned, no single trick will do the magic, we might need a combination of actions to overcome the block.

I had promised to tell you what happened to Wendy, head of Asia-Pacific business development for applications at a major technology company, who was on the brink of a leader’s block when I spoke to her. She spoke to her manager who was very considerate and understood her situation. She took a three-week vacation to start with. Once she was back, she job crafted her role and redesigned it to expand her scope and impact. She also got involved in a global initiative, which gave her a great opportunity to learn and contribute. Wendy is an ideal case of someone who caught the onset of leader’s block early and took appropriate action.

Personally, the two actions that helped me get over my leader’s block were working with a coach and the opinions of my team. I gathered the courage to have a candid conversation with each one of them and asked for their honest inputs. I can’t thank my team enough. Had it not been for them I would not have paid any heed to my changed behaviour and mindset, and could have continued being in denial. I was also fortunate that my manager was very supportive and agreed to sponsor an executive coach for me. Undergoing the coaching changed my life—literally! I realized the power and impact of coaching, and unconsciously it sowed the seed of my inner theme of making an impact. Little did I know that a few years later I would become an executive coach!

I close the chapter by saying that apart from taking action, we need a lot of patience and perseverance as we work though our leader’s block as no action will yield results overnight.

There is good news about leader’s block. It’s temporary, it’s treatable and helps to provide clarity. Remember the B.L.O.C.K.
